Why panels rather than mesh or fabric

A pit in a school or a camp lives a different life from one in a garden. It goes up and comes down dozens of times a season, gets handled by staff who did not choose it, and takes a hundred children a week rather than four.

Commercial HDPE panels are built for that cycle. The walls are solid plastic rather than fabric or netting, so there is nothing to puncture and nothing to tear at a stake point. Sections arrive pre-attached, fold flat, and carry on built-in handles or stack on a cart. Rubber grip feet hold on playground blacktop and gym floors alike.

The trade is weight and cost. These ship in several boxes, and moving a court in one piece takes more than one adult. Against that, a PE specialist who previously built a pit out of cafeteria tables and jump ropes every session gets that time back permanently.

Complete courts

Each set arrives as a full pit with two 8.5 inch gaga balls and a pump. Panels stand 30 inches, with a built-in low step for getting in and out.

Building the court to size

The same panels are sold as modular kits, which is the more flexible way to buy if the group is likely to grow or the budget arrives in stages. A gate set provides the entrance plus three walls; panel sets add four walls each.

Each panel is 48 inches wide, so the section count sets the perimeter directly: twelve sections give roughly 48 feet of wall, which closes into a court about 15 feet across. Sixteen sections reach about 20 feet, and twenty sections about 25. Two gate sets on the largest build give a second entrance, which speeds up getting a big group in and out between rounds.

Buying modular also means a damaged panel is a single replacement rather than a new court.

Sizing for a class or a session

Capacity figures assume children. A class of 28 in a 25 foot court is a full pit, which is the point at a field day and too crowded for a regular lesson.

For PE, several specialists order more panels than the class size strictly requires so that everyone starts in the ring rather than queueing. Rounds run two to five minutes, so a slightly oversized court keeps more of the class moving for more of the lesson.

For camps, the constraint is usually the schedule rather than the group. A 25 foot court absorbs a whole cabin at once, and the game runs itself without a counsellor refereeing.

Setup, storage and moving

Assembly. Sections come pre-attached, so a court goes together in roughly ten minutes. One PE teacher reports that first-time assembly took less time than expected, and the sets include spare parts against breakage.

Storage. Panels accordion-fold flat. A court stores against a wall or on a flat stack cart rather than needing a cupboard.

Moving. Built-in handles make single sections easy for one adult, and children can carry one section between them. A court left joined together is heavy enough that owners describe needing several people, so break it into sections before moving it any distance.

Delivery. Larger courts arrive across several boxes. Check the count and the condition on arrival, since panel damage in transit is the most common complaint on these sets.

What holds up, and what does not

The durability record on these is the strongest of any pit type. A church reports a court in daily gym use for almost a year and describes it as the most-played item in the building. A Cub Scout pack running thirty-plus adults and children through one reports no damage. A backyard owner at six months describes it as holding up through all weather.

Two limits are worth knowing. Panels left in sustained direct heat can warp slightly over time, so a court stored outdoors through a hot summer will not stay perfectly flat. And while HDPE does not puncture the way fabric does, panels can arrive cracked or scratched if a box is mishandled.

Supervision and surfaces

Gaga is self-refereeing, which is most of its appeal to programmes that are short on staff. Players call themselves out, there is no scoring, and one adult can watch a full court from a distance.

The usual limits still apply: no diving or sliding, no cleats, an adult present for groups under eight, and a headcount matched to the court. The low step entrance matters more in an institutional setting than a domestic one, since eliminated players leave the pit constantly and a wall they have to climb slows the whole session down.

Rubber feet mean these work on gym floors without marking or sliding, which is what makes them a wet-weather option as well as an outdoor one.
