Sizing guide

Gaga Ball Pit Sizes and Dimensions

Gaga ball pits run from 10 to 25 feet across, with 15 feet the most common. Walls stand between 23 and 36 inches depending on the type and the diameter. No official standard exists, so these are the sizes manufacturers have settled on rather than a published specification.

Is there a standard size?

No. Gaga ball has no governing body, so nothing sets an official court size. What exists instead is a range that manufacturers have converged on, running from 10 feet across to 25, with 15 feet the most common.

Almost every pit is a regular octagon, which is why the diameter is quoted as a single number: measured corner to opposite corner, a 15 foot pit is 15 feet in any direction. A few are hexagons, and those play slightly faster because the ball comes off fewer, wider walls.

Diameter and how many players fit

15 ft1805 to 12The size most product lines are built around
20 ft24012 to 20PE classes, larger groups
25 ft300up to 28Camps, tournaments, community events

Player counts come from the sets themselves and assume children rather than adults. Put teenagers in a 10 foot pit and it holds four comfortably, not six.

Caught between two sizes, go up. A roomy pit still plays well, whereas a cramped one turns into a scrum and rounds end in seconds.

Wall height

Wall height gets far less attention than diameter and changes the game more. Low walls let the ball escape and suit small children who need to climb in and out. Tall walls keep the ball live, let players brace against them, and make the game faster.

Notice that the pop-up walls grow with the diameter. That is deliberate: a bigger court needs a taller wall to keep a hard-struck ball inside. Inflatables stay at roughly the same height whatever their diameter, which is part of why a large inflatable can feel loose to play in.

How much space you need

The pit is not the whole footprint. Players step out when they are hit, and somebody has to walk round the outside to fetch a stray ball, so plan for a clear margin on every side. Three feet is enough on grass; more if the pit sits near a fence, a hedge or a driveway.

PitClear area to allow
10 ft16 by 16 ft
15 ft21 by 21 ft
20 ft26 by 26 ft
25 ft31 by 31 ft

The ground matters as much as the area. A pit on a slope sends the ball to the low side all round, and bare soil turns to mud inside a month of daily use. Grass, blacktop, mulch and gym floors all work.

Choosing the size for your group

Count the players, not the children. A family of four with visiting friends is a 10 or 15 foot question. A church youth group of twenty is a 20 foot question even if only twelve turn up on an average week.

Measure the space before you choose the pit. The clear area above is the number that decides it, and plenty of people discover their yard is 18 feet wide after the 20 foot pit arrives.

Think about who carries it. Diameter drives weight. A 10 foot pop-up is a one-person lift at around 25 lb; a 20 foot one is 45 lb and a two-person job. Commercial panels ship in sections and move on a cart.

Mixed ages tilt smaller. A big pit with a wide age range means the youngest spend most of the round running and never reach the ball.

Sizes by construction type

Inflatables come in 15, 20 and 26 feet. They inflate in three to five minutes and pack down smallest, and the walls stay around 27 inches at every diameter.

Pop-ups come in 10, 15 and 20 feet, with the wall height rising as the court grows. These are the closest thing to a fixed court that still folds into a bag.

Commercial HDPE comes in 15, 20 and 25 feet, built from 48 inch panels standing 30 inches tall. Because the panels are modular, a court can be extended later rather than replaced.

Measured examples

Published dimensions for gaga pits are unreliable. Several listings carry obvious errors, and a few omit dimensions entirely. The sets below are the ones whose figures are complete and internally consistent, so these are measurements rather than claims.

Dimensions for building your own

A wooden pit follows the same numbers. Eight equal sides, a diameter between 10 and 20 feet, and walls between 24 and 36 inches depending on the age group. For a 15 foot octagon each of the eight walls runs a little over 6 feet, which is why 8 foot boards are the usual starting stock.

Bracket kits that hold the panels at the right angle are sold separately by several suppliers. We do not stock them, so this section is here for the measurements rather than as a buying guide.

What size ball

An 8.5 inch playground ball, inflated soft enough to squeeze, whatever the size of the pit. Diameter of the court does not change the ball.

The exception is age. Sets built for younger children sometimes ship a 7 inch ball, which is easier for small hands and slower across the floor.

Frequently asked

What are the official gaga ball pit dimensions?

There are none. Gaga ball has no governing body, so no official court size exists. Manufacturers have settled on 10 to 25 feet across, with walls between 23 and 36 inches, and 15 feet is the most common diameter.

How big is a standard gaga ball pit?

Fifteen feet across is the most widely produced size and suits 5 to 12 players. It measures 180 inches corner to opposite corner.

How tall is a gaga ball pit?

Between 23 and 36 inches. Pop-up walls rise with the diameter, from 24 inches at 10 feet to 36 inches at 20 feet. Inflatables sit around 26 to 27 inches, and commercial HDPE panels stand 30 inches.

How many people can play gaga ball at once?

Two to six in a 10 foot pit, 5 to 12 at 15 feet, 12 to 20 at 20 feet, and up to 28 at 25 feet. Those figures assume children; adults need more room.

How much space do I need for a gaga ball pit?

Allow about three feet of clear ground on every side. A 15 foot pit wants a flat area of roughly 21 by 21 feet, and a 20 foot pit around 26 by 26.

What size gaga ball pit should I buy?

Match the diameter to the number of players you expect, then check the space you have. If you fall between two sizes, take the larger one.

Are gaga ball pits octagons or hexagons?

Most are octagons. Hexagonal pits exist and play a little faster, since the ball rebounds off fewer and wider walls.
